Watercolor Painting of this alleyway in Gibraltar.
Este es un motivo que estuve fotografiando en muchísimas ocasiones para poder pintarlo pero nunca estaba del todo satisfecho con la luz o los tonos. Es un callejón muy estrecho con una subida muy pronunciada pero con muy poca luz. Era importante coger la foto en el momento apropiado del día e incluso del año. Casualmente, mi suegro me regalo un libro sobre las calles de Gibraltar del autor Manolo Galliano titulado “A Rocky Labyrinth”, donde encontré esta foto justo con la luz que buscaba. Por supuesto doy las gracias al fotógrafo de libro Victor M. Hermida por permitirme usar la foto para este cuadro.
No es un motivo muy luminoso ni especialmente colorido. El reto consistía en intentar hacer ver al espectador que incluso dentro de un callejón estrecho y oscuro puede sentir que esta en un día claro y soleado, viendo esos reflejos de la luz en los edificios del fondo.
He buscado un buen equilibrio y contrastes entre colores fríos y cálidos, luces y sombras y colores complementarios.

This is a subject I’ve been photographing on many occasions in order to paint it, but I was never quite satisfied with the light or the tones. It’s a very narrow alley with a very steep incline but very little light. It was important to take the photo at the right time of day and even of the year. As luck would have it, my father-in-law gave me a book about the streets of Gibraltar by author Manolo Galliano titled “A Rocky Labyrinth”, where I found this photo with just the light I was looking for. Of course, I thank the book’s photographer Victor M. Hermida for allowing me to use the photo for this painting.
It’s not a very bright or particularly colorful subject. The challenge was to try to make the viewer feel as if they were on a clear, sunny day even within a narrow, dark alley, seeing those reflections of light on the buildings in the background.
I sought a good balance and contrast between cool and warm colors, lights and shadows, and complementary colors.
Schmincke Horadam watercolors on fine-grain Arches paper of 300g. Dimensions 35 x 50cm. Completed in April 2023.
